Chae Sawn national park is a rich mountainous forest located in the northest of Lampang province. It is situated in the districts of Muang Bahn and Chae Sawn, and covers an area of about 768 square kilometers.
The forest and mountains provide and important water source for the surrounding area. The park contains waterfalls, caves and its famous hot springs along with many species of fauna and flora.
History
Before Chae Sawn became a national park it was a forest park which had two names "Eang Nam Oun" and "Chaw Sawn waterfalls".
The park became Thailand's 58th national park on 28 July 1988.
Topography
"Pee Pan Nam" mountain range runs on a north south axis. The tallest mountain on this range is "Doi Langgar". The forest provides an important source of water for many creeks that flow down into the river Wang.
Flora and fauna
The forest include lower mountain evergreen forest, moist evergreen forest, pine forest, dry dipterocarp forest, and tropical mixed deciduous.
Wildlife in the park include barking deer, mouse deer, wild pig, Asian golden cat, rabbit, serow, flying lemur, monkey, skunk, bear and squirrels. There are also many bird species. Cicadas are particularly high in number during April every year when they visit the hot springs.
Tourist attractions
- Chae Sawn waterfall originates from Mae Mon creek. It has six levels and many pools. It is located about 1 km from the headquarters and can be reached by car or on foot.
- Mae Mon waterfall is a fast flowing high waterfall with many steps. It is 5 km from the headquarters by dirt track.
- Mae Koon waterfall is close the Mae Mon waterfall. Water falls over 100 meters and flows into the same river as Mae Mon.
- Mae Bieg waterfall is located 3 km from the headquarters and can be reached by a nature trail. The falls drop 100 m over 3 levels.
- Hot springs There are 9 boreholes emitting the hot water from deep in the earth. The area is covered with many small rocks and you will notice the strange smell of sulphur in the air. The water emerges at a temperature of over 70ºC.
- The Warm spring is a pool where the water from the hot spring meets with the cold water of Chae Sawn waterfall creating pleasant warm water for a bath.
- The Hot spring rooms comprise of 11 rooms for relaxing in large pools of spring water and 16 rooms for taking a Thai style bath. The rooms are all linked by pipes to the hot spring. Bathing in the water is said to be good for healthy blood flow. Fees are collected.
- Pha-ngam cave is located at sub station 2 which is 8 km from Wang Nua district. Substation 2 is about 60 km from the headquarters. There are many caves.
How to get there
The park is located about 68 km from Lumpang. There are two ways to get to the park.
1. Starting from the sports stadium in Lumpang, follow the Lumpang - Harnchad road. At the T - junction in Barn Nam - Tong turn right and follow the road number 1157 (Lumpang - Hueybang - Muang Bahn) for about 55 km, then turn right into the road number 1252 (Kuang Kom - Pang Fairng). It is about 11 km to the headquarters. In total it is about 68 km.
2. Travel from Lumpang on road 1035 (Lumpang - Chae Hom) to Chae Hom for about 58 km. Then turn left at the T - junction at Barn pongkob and follow the road number 1287 (Muang - Chae Hom) for about 6 km. Then turn right into road number 1252 and follow it for 11 km to the headquarters. In total it is about 75 km.
Accommodations and facilities
The park has a visitor centre, 10 bungalows and 2 dormitories (youth hostels). There is also a meeting room, and a camping site where equipment can be rented. There is a park restaurant. There are also 10 or so privately run food and snack stalls.

Chae Son National Park
Chae Son National Park is a rich mountainous forest located in the northeast of Lumpang province. It is situated in the districts of Muang Bahn and Jae hom and covers an area of about 592 square km. The forest and mountains provide an important water source for the surrounding area. The Park has many interesting features including, waterfalls, caves and its famous hot springs. Along with many species of fauna and flora. All of this makes Jae Sawn an important place for tourism within Lumpang Province.
Before Chae Son became the National Park it was a Forest Park which had two names Eang Nam Oun and Jae Sawn Waterfall The latter naming it after one of the Parks Waterfalls. Ministers approved the promotion of tourism in Lumpang province and the go ahead was given to convert Jae Sawn Waterfall into a National Park.
Preparations were made from May 1986 to December 1987 for the celebration of the Kings 60th birthday at Jae Sawn Waterfall on the 5th December 1987.
The Park was officially surveyed by Royal Forest Department staff soon after this and led to a decision by the board of directors, which in turn led to the Royal Decree that officially turned Jae Sawn into a National Park on 28th July 1988, becoming Thailand’s 58th National Park.
Geographical Features
The national park is a mountainous area with 81 degrees Celsius hotspring over rocky terrain, providing a misty and picturesque scene.
Weather Condition
Rainy season is from May to October, winterseason is from November to February and summerseason is from March to April. Usually, tourists canvisit the national park all year round.
Varieties of Plants and Wild Animals
Mixed deciduous forest and deciduous dipterocarp blankets the park with various plants including Afzelia xylocarpa, Chukrasia tabularis, Toona ciliata,Diospyros pubicalyx, Lagerstroemia calyculata, Dipterocarpus alatus, Pinus merkusii, P.kesiya,Pterocarpus macrocarpus, Shorea obtusa, S.siamensis and D. obtusifolius.
The park is home to animal such as CommonMuntjak, Mouse Deer, Common Wild Boar, AsianGolden Cat, Siamese Hare, Southern Serow, Malayan Flying Lemur, Langur, Macaque, Porcupine,Bear, Squirrel and Treeshrew.
Various kinds of birds such as White-rumpedShama, Red Junglefowl, Woodpecker, Hawk, Bulbul,Barbet, Tailorbird, Green Pigeon, Warbler, Babbler,and Dove.
Annually, there is a number of cicada conglomerating near the hotspring. People believe that theycome to consume mineral water here.

Chae Son Waterfall
Chae Son Waterfall, originating from MaeNam Mon is full of water all year round. The 6 levelwaterfall cascading down the cliff to large naturalpool on each level. It is not far from the NationalPark office. The waterfall can be accessed only 1kilometre by walk from the parking area.
Mae Mawn Waterfall
Mae Mawn Waterfall: is fast flowing with a high fall comprising of many steps. It is 5km from the headquarters by dirt track.
Mae Koon Waterfall
Mae Koon Waterfall: close to Mae Mawn waterfall, falls over 100 m and flows into the same river as Mae Mawn
Mae Peak Waterfall
Mae Peak Waterfall, one of the beautiful waterfalls is the 3 level waterfall with 100 metres high. It is easily access and only 3 kilometres from the national park office.
Pha – ngam Cave
Pha – ngam Cave: is located at substation 2 which is 8km from wahng Nua district. Substation 2 in about 60km from the headquarters . In this area there are many caves which tourists can visit, others include; Nam Cave, Mor Cave, Luang Cave and Loug Kae Cave.
Enjoy Dok Siew
Dok Siew, Bauhinia tenuiflora Watt ex Clarke of family Caesalpiniaceae, blossoms in February every year in the mountains of Par Miang Village, about 18 kilometers from Jae Son National Park Office. The wild flower decoratively blossoms all over the mountains in which traveler can drive to enjoy its beauty.

Chae Son Hot Spring
Hot Springs: Provide an interesting feature. There are 9 boreholes emiting the hot water from deep in the earth. The area is covered with many small rocks and you will notice the strange smell of sulphur in the air. The water emerges at a temperature of 73 degrees Celsius. Enabling you to boil an egg in it in about 17 minutes, if you so wished.
The Hot Spring Rooms
The Hot Spring Rooms: comprise of 11 rooms for relaxing in large pools of spring water and 16 rooms for taking a Thai style bath. The rooms are all linked by pipes to the hot spring. Bathing in the water is said to be good for healthy blood flow. You will have to pay to use these rooms.
Nature Trails
There are two nature trails along Huay Mae Morn Stream.
Jae Son Waterfall – Jae Son Hot Spring Nature Trail, about two kilometers and about one walking hour. It starts from the hot spring to electric water-power plant and goes by to the new route to meet the started point
Mae Peak Nature Trail, about four kilometers and about two walking hours, starts from electric water-power plant to the same route mentioned above. There are signs showing details along the two routes.

How to get there
By Car
The Park is located about 66km from Lampang province. There are two ways to get to the Park which are accessible all year round.
Starting from the sports stadium in Lampang. Follow the Lumpang – Harnchad road, at the T-Junchtion in Ban Nam-Tong turn right and follow road number 1157 (Lampang-Huai bang-Muang Bahn) for about 55km then turn right onto road number 1287 (Muang Bahn-Jae Hom).
