The Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains (also Swabian-Franconian Forest) is a 1187 km², mostly wooded, is rugged and up to 586.4 m above sea level. NHN high mountain country in northeastern Baden-Württemberg and form the natural spatial main unit 108 within the Swabian Keuper-Lias-country (Main unit group 10 or D58). The name comes from the fact that in the Middle Ages, the boundary between the duchies of Franconia and Swabia was also through this forest. Furthermore, here meets Swabian dialect area in the south Franconian in the north.

The natural space Swabian-Franconian Forest forms in Baden-Württemberg the northernmost part of the Keuper highlands , which extends from the Baar on the border with Switzerland in the south to the mountains hatred in Bavaria extends to the north.
Adjacent natural areas are in the west, the Neckar basin , north of the Hohenlohe-Haller level , in the East Franks height and the Central Franconian Basin , in the south, the eastern foreland and virgin forest and forest Welzheimer .

West of the digester, the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains are predominantly part of the nature park Swabian-Franconian Forest .
Geology
The Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains are a Keuper stage in the Southwest German cuesta landscape . At the highest elevations there are still remnants of the Black Jura . The eastern and northeastern parts are characterized by extended step surfaces while particularly in the western and southwestern part of a strong fragmentation through streams and rivers has taken place. In the west and southwest are therefore larger areas can be found in an altitude between 500 and approximately 600 meters, while the east and northeast has mainly heights of 400 to 500 meters.
Mountainous parts and Mountains
The Swabian-Franconian Forest divided clockwise (beginning approximately in the north) in the parts Waldburger mountains , Mainhardter forest , Limpurger and Ellwanger Berge , Virngrund , Murrhardter forest , Löwenstein Mountains , Heilbronner mountains and mountain Sulmer level ; In addition to these mountainous parts is one of the scenery between the latter two mountain ranges lying Weinberg Valley .
The highest elevation of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains is the Hohe Brach (586.4 m). More high mountains are among other Hagberg (585.2 m), Hornberg (580.0 m), Hohenstein (572 m), Hohenberg (568.9 m), Hohentannen (565.4 m), Altenberg (564.7 m ), Stockberg (538.9 m), Flin (534.8 m), Juxkopf (533.1 m) and Steinknickle (524.9 m).
Water
The Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains are almost entirely within the catchment area of the River Neckar, and thus of the Rhine . They are mainly from the rivers Murr in the West, Rems in the south and Kocher and Jagst drained the north and east or its tributaries. Among the known tributaries of Murr include the Lauter , the Bottwar and Hörschbach ; Rems flows to, among other things Wieslauf and the kettle flax , red , beaver , Buhler , Unterohrn and Brettach . Skip to flow the Neckar Sulm and Schozach in the northwest of the country. The Virngrund belongs partly to the catchment area of the rotách, a tributary of the Wörnitz which the Danube flows.
Hill Country as a whole by a high water density. Two typical for the mountain featured are numerous caves called rock niches at the headwaters and the large number of small waterfalls , which are mostly of hard sandstone - banks have formed.
Many waters flow southeast first, then turning to the northwest with sharp bend, a consequence of numerous deflections former ward Danube rivers flowing towards the river system of the Rhine during the younger Tertiary .
In the Swabian-Franconian Forest mountains there are a variety of lakes , including the Aichstruter reservoir , Breitenauer lake , book Horner lake , Diebachstausee , Ebnisee , Eisenbachsee , Finster Red Lake , Gleichener See , Gnadentalsee , Hagerwaldsee , Hammerschmiedesee , Hüttenbühlsee , Leinecksee , Neumühlsee , Reichenbachstausee , Treibsee und the Waldsee . Most of the lakes were various reasons as reservoirs created: the older reservoirs, such as the Ebnisee, for the purpose of rafting , the younger, for reasons of flood protection. Most of the lakes are used for bathing and in winter for skating in the summer.
Climate
For the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains, the station can Ellwangen (439 m) are assumed to be typical of the natural area. The mean monthly temperature here in January -1.7 ° C , 16.9 ° C in July. The average annual temperature is 7.6 ° C. In the Keuper forest mountains can be about 140 to 160 days, with a daily average of at least 10 ° C demonstrated.
The average annual rainfall in the Keuper forest mountains varies depending on the retail space. In the lower elevations, it is about 750 to 900 mm, at higher altitudes from about 900 to 1400 mm. The damming effect of the Keuper forest mountains causes - as for example in the Swabian Alb - increased rainfall in the step edge areas around the Welzheimer forest to the Löwenstein Mountains and the southern part of Hohenlohe plain . In the Keuper forest mountains there is hardly an altitude of 500 m, can still here the average annual rainfall of up to 1000 mm and higher. Thus, the rainfall is similar to that in the peak positions of the Middle Kuppenalb m in height about 900. This phenomenon can be explained mainly by the location of the westward lying Kraichgau , by virtue of its reliefs can serve as a transit area rain fronts.
Dialect Geography
Through the Swabian-Franconian Forest draw important isoglosses (boundaries between individual features in the user language), the overall Swabian region in the south of ostfränkischem or südfränkischem separate area in the north. In the West, they are quite wide fanned out, so that the transition between the dialects are geographically distributed in a staggered sequence of individual changes in vocabulary and pronunciation, so here is a Swabian-Franconian wide transition region. To the east of the forest area, however, the isoglosses tightly run next to each other or together, the language change is so geographically very abruptly, the dialect boundary is here as sharp as otherwise rare in Germany. Coarse extend the isoglosses from west to east, they shall come from the area south of Heilbronn in the region is a throught the Löwenstein Mountains, then between Rott Valley in the north and Bitzer in the south through and then cross the stove south of Gaildorf and Jagst south of Stimpfach . Farther east, to Dinkelsbühl the isoglosses spread again on wide, so here is a second area Swabian-Franconian further language mixing. Can be observed for some time spreading Swabian language features to the north, especially along the axes of the Neckar and facilities. As explanations population movements, different high reputation of the two dialects, language use by social class, low presence of the Franconian in the media are often etc. called.
